Questions for Revelation 11
Summary of last week’s class:
After the plagues and punishments of chapter 9, John described a mighty angel coming on the scene with great power (Rev. 10:1-3). The angel had a message that was going to come to pass soon and there would no longer be a delay (Rev. 10:5-7). John was told to take the scroll and consume it. Though there were sweet aspects to God’s message there also were hard truths that John needed to digest and be willing and ready to share (Rev. 10:8-10). After John eats the scroll he is told that he must go again and prophesy to many peoples and nations about the things he has heard. The message of devastation for God’s enemies needed to be embraced and announced, but God’s people needed to be ready to endure hardship as they patiently waited for God to vindicate them. Chapter 11 contains the message John was told to eat and consume. In chapter 11 we find out what made the message sweet but also what made it bitter for God’s people.

Questions for Revelation: Chapters 8-9
Summary of Revelation 1-7:
We have not had class in two weeks but remember where we’ve been so far. John introduces us to the resurrected Jesus and shows Him in His exalted glory (ch.1). The seven churches were encouraged, rebuked, and examined (ch. 2-3). We saw God on his glorious throne being worshipped and the lamb of God (i.e., Jesus) receiving the same treatment (Rev. 4-5). God began to show how He would deal with the enemies of His people by allowing the lamb to open the six seals of judgment (Rev. 6). There is a praise break where the sealed and redeemed of God are seen standing before the throne praising God and worshipping Him because of the redemption He has provided (Rev. 7).
This week we will continue with chapter 8 and the 7th and final seal. Read chapters 8 and 9. Remember the persecution God’s people were facing. Think through any Old Testament stories that these chapters remind you of and try not to get distracted or discouraged by the details. Revelation says the Christians win no matter what! These chapters introduce us to the seven trumpets and the plagues that follow their blasts.
Questions from chapter 8-9:
- What does the silence in Revelation 8:1 refer to?
- What does the scene of Revelation 8:2-5 teach us about prayer (cf. Rev. 5:8, 6:9-11)?
- What is the purpose of trumpets throughout the Bible (see Numbers 10:1-10; 1 Thess. 4:16; 1 Cor. 15:52)?
- What Old Testament account does the first and second trumpet remind you of and why (Rev. 8:7-9)?
- What do fallen stars, darkened sun/moon represent in the book and in this type of literature? What does it represent in Revelation 8:10-12?
- What is the disadvantage of being unsealed in Revelation 9:2-4?
- What is the response of those who survived the plagues and hardship in Revelation 9:20-21? What does that tell us about the human heart?
- How would this material in these two chapters have helped Christians suffering in the first century? How does it help us today to live for Jesus?
