Summary of last week’s class:
Revelation 21 is a description of the triumphant church after the Roman persecution has ceased. John uses Old Testament language to speak of the time when God’s people would enjoy victory over sorrow, death, and loss. The picture of the church is similar to what we read in the Old Testament about the tabernacle and the temple. The church of Christ is pictured as a beautiful bride, a jeweled city, and a place that continues to shine its light. Revelation 21 should encourage us about the church from heaven’s perspective (cf. 1 Pet. 2:5-9). God sees us as royal victors who are reigning with him now and will reign with him forever.
Revelation 22 is the last chapter in the book and the last chapter in the New Testament. John includes promises, blessings, invitations, and final warnings. Much of what John said in chapter 1 is repeated in chapter 22. Jesus’ credentials are highlighted, and readers are warned not to tamper with the message given. Revelation is not the easiest book to understand, but John’s final words help us to see that the central message is not impossible for any of us to understand.
Questions from Revelation 22:
1. How are the nations healed (22:2)?
2. When will we see God’s face (22:4)?
3. What does Jesus mean when he says he’s coming soon (22:6)?
4. How many times does Jesus say he’s coming soon in chapter 22?
5. Why was John told not to seal about the words of the prophecy (22:10)?
6. What happens to those who add to or take away from the book (22:18-19)?
7. What is the last thing John says to Jesus (22:20)?

Summary of last week’s class:
Revelation 20 describes the complete defeat of Satan. Just like the beast and false prophet (cf. 19:20-21) he is bound and overthrown by the Lord. John uses symbolic terminology to describe his ruin, but the message is clear: Rome will be destroyed and so will the Devil who used Rome to torment the people of God (20:1-3). Satan will be released after some time to continue to do his wicked work in the world but the final result for him will be the same. John describes the martyred saints as reigning victoriously with Jesus and enjoying the blessings of the first resurrection as they look forward to the second and final resurrection (20:4-6). Though Satan will try other things in the future with other nations and systems he will meet the same fate (Rev. 20:7-10). John closes the chapter with a judgment scene. While some view this as a description of the final judgment I believe it’s best to view it as a picture of the judgment/defeat of Rome and those who were aligned with her in the first century (20:11-15).
Questions from Revelation 21:
- What is meant by the new heaven and new earth that John saw (21:1)? Notice how the phrase is used elsewhere in the Bible (see Isaiah 65:17, 66:22; 2 Peter 3:13).
- Where does the new city come from (21:2)?
- What will God do for those who are inhabitants of the new city (21:3-4)? What does this mean?
- What/Who does the angel promise to show John (21:9)? What does John see (21:10-21)?
- What does it sound like John is describing in 21:15-21?
- List the different metaphors John uses to describe what he sees in this chapter.
- How does God describe his activity in 21:5?
- Why will the new city have no need for the sun or moon to shine (21:22-23)?
- In what way do the nations walk in the light provided by the city (21:24)? Why are the gates of the city never shut (21:25)?
- Who is John saying will not be able to enter the city based on what we’ve read in chapter 20 (21:27)?
