Questions for Revelation: Chapter 7
Summary of last week’s class:
We covered much of chapter six and discussed the seals being opened, along with the punishment that came with each of them. The seals are opened by Jesus because he is in control of when God sends out his wrath on the nations. The punishment comes in various stages, but even the punishment shows God’s restraint. God does not want to obliterate the wicked but hopes they will repent and turn to him. The Christians would have their lives affected by the plagues coming on the world, but they were not the target. The righteous who had been slain were under the altar crying out for God’s vengeance to come on those who martyred them.
**We will cover the rest of chapter 6 in this week’s class.

Questions for Revelation: Chapter 6
Summary of last week’s class:
Chapter four begins with John being shown an open door in heaven. John sees some marvelous things and the symbolism that will characterize much of the rest of the book begins in chapter 4. God is shown on the throne in all of his glory. He is surrounded by those who worship him. There are 24 elders who sit on 24 thrones and also 4 living creatures. We said the 24 elders represent the church (saved and in a glorified state) and the 4 living creatures represent the seraphim or cherubim (i.e., heavenly beings/angels). They worship God because he is worthy and has created everything for his own purpose.
Chapter 5 begins with a scroll that no one can open. Then a lion from Judah emerges that can open the seal and he is described as a lamb that had been slain. The lion/lamb who is worthy to open the scroll is Jesus Christ. He is worshipped by those in heaven just like God the Father in chapter 4. Jesus is worshipped because he died for our sins, saved people out of every nation, and made us a kingdom and priests to God.

Chapter 6 starts a new section with the seals being opened and wrath being poured out from heaven. Before we get into chapter 6 this week I’d like to try to answer any questions you have about chapters 1-5. If you have questions about anything we’ve discussed, anything I didn’t make clear, or anything I’ve covered too quickly just text me or email me the questions. Questions for Revelation: Chapters 4–5
Summary of last week’s class:
Chapter 3 rounds out the message to the seven churches. Jesus rebukes and praises the churches in relation to their faithfulness or lack thereof. The church at Sardis (3:1-6) needed to strengthen what they had remaining. Some in Sardis had not given in to the spiritual lethargy that was taking over the church. Jesus promised that those who overcame would be clothed in white and their name would be confessed before the heavenly Father.
The church at Philadelphia (3:7-13) does not have anything negative said about them. Jesus encouraged them to hold on even in the midst of persecution and they would be vindicated. He would write the name of God on them, and they would be a pillar in God’s temple. The church at Laodicea (3:14-22) has nothing positive said about them. They were spiritually lukewarm and needed to repent. Jesus rebukes those who he loves and holds out a final reward for the church at Laodicea if they repented and regained their spiritual zeal. The seven churches are challenged to hold firm to their faith, get rid of sin and things that are holding them back from complete faithfulness to the Lord. Jesus is in the midst of the church and aware of her activities. Jesus sees the suffering, compromising, the remnant, and the faithful. These letters remind us that Jesus is watching, will he be pleased with what he sees in us?
This week we will study chapters 4-5 together. Read both of these chapters. From this point on in the book of Revelation there will be a lot of symbolic language, do not be intimidated or overwhelmed or discouraged. Just remember in Christ you’re a winner no matter how it’s described in this book!

- According to Revelation 4:8-11 what is taking place in heaven? What does this mean for us on earth?
- Why is God worthy of worship (4:11)?
- Why was John crying and should he have been sad (5:4)?
