Questions for Revelation: Chapter 2
Summary of last week’s class:
Last week we looked at the first chapter to the Book of Revelation. John promised a blessing to those who read and keep the message that they find in this book (Rev. 1:3). All three members of the Godhead are involved in the book’s composition and play an important role throughout it (Rev. 1:4-5). Christians are exalted to royal status because of what Jesus has done for us (Rev. 1:6) and Jesus promised to come soon in judgment on Rome because of their persecution of his people (Rev. 1:7). John sees and hears an amazing description of Jesus which is similar to OT descriptions of a divine individual (Rev. 1:12-16; see also Daniel 7:9, 10:5-6).
The opening description of Jesus is designed to show Jesus as far more powerful, majestic, and glorious than any opposition that his church has faced or is facing. When John saw Jesus he fell at his feet like a dead man, but he was told not to be afraid and reminded that Jesus had overcome death and was in the midst of his people/church (Rev. 1:17-20, also see Rev. 1:12-13). The major thing to keep in mind from chapter 1 is that Revelation is a book about Jesus, he is aware of what is happening with his people, and he is always involved to defend and judge–– Christians should take courage (John 16:33)!
Questions from Chapter 2
- What was the first love that the church at Ephesus had left (Rev. 2:4)?
- Would you consider the church at Ephesus a “sound/healthy” congregation (Rev. 2:1-7)? Which of the four churches addressed in chapter 2 would you consider to be the most sound/healthy (other than Smyrna), why?
- According to Revelation 2:8-11, what was the church at Smyrna doing wrong? What does this tell you about Jesus’ evaluation of his people?
- Who is Antipas and why is he a noteworthy individual (Rev. 2:13)? Where else does he appear in the New Testament?
- What negative quality/qualities do the church at Pergamum and Thyatira have in common (see Rev. 2:12-17, 2:18-29)?
- How does Jesus/ the Spirit conclude each of his evaluations to the churches (Rev. 2:7, 2:11, 2:17, 2:29)? Why?
- What do you think is being referred to by the doctrine of Balaam (Rev. 2:14)? Also, what is the doctrine of the Nicolaitans (Rev. 2:6, 2:15)?
- What does Jesus do at the end of his interaction with each of the churches that is encouraging? What does this teach us about correction (Rev. 2:7, 2:10, 2:17, 2:26-28)?
